I neither attempt to depict realism nor idealism, rather to capture an expression in response to a pose and the private moment between artist and model; artist and studio. With particular focus on light, composition and colour I aim to translate a sense of intimacy between these relationships from private to public. Furthermore, situating the poses within the context of my studio gives the viewer a voyeuristic insight.

The colours and the fluidity of my technique, whereby layers are contemplated and drips are formed results in some uninhibited occurrences. These sustain a sense of freedom by transferring some of my control to the medium, subsequently creating a balance between realism and expressionism.

The application of paint and light, combined with the models submissive body-language creates an atmosphere of vulnerability, fragility and tension. Consequently this renders the spectator as a dominant and perhaps sinister presence.
